Story

Before Castlevania

While Reinhardt was growing up, he knew that he had to live up to high expectations and was often bullied by other children who couldn't believe that he was a descendant of the legendary Belmont Clan. This filled his mind with feelings of self-doubt, but would eventually also give him the strength and determination to prove himself as a genuine vampire hunter.

Events of Castlevania 64

Soon Reinhardt received news of Dracula's return and traveled to his castle in Wallachia. While on his way, he encountered a young girl named Carrie Fernandez, who was gifted with great magical powers and a descendant of the Belnades Clan. She had sensed Dracula's return and accompanied him on his quest. After the two heroes had reached the towers located at the outer wall of the castle, Lord Dracula appeared and taunted them to turn back or die a horrible death.

While they wandered the castle grounds, Reinhardt and Carrie stumbled upon an old and seemingly abandoned villa. When finding their way, they found themselves in a room where a field of red roses grew. Suddenly, a young woman entered the room and asked them to step aside so that she could water the roses. The two heroes asked what she was doing there and she introduced herself as Rosa, the one responsible for looking after the roses. She then tipped her watering can, which contained blood instead of water. Reinhardt and Carrie asked in disbelief if she was a vampire and Rosa responded by asking why they had fear. Rosa warned them that wandering around carelessly would soon cost them their lives. Reinhardt commented that he could not disobey his father's teachings to never attack the weak and Carrie pointed out that Rosa was somehow different from the creatures they had encountered before. The flower girl said that sentimentality would not help them and assured them that she would forget ever seeing them. The two heroes both gave their reasons why they couldn't leave, which the vampire understood. She explained how to proceed further to Dracula's Castle and directed them to the villa's archives. Before fading away, she told them that they needed to find a key, which another adventurer took in order to enter the archives.

They went in search for this adventurer and found him exploring the rooms of the villa. When the man noticed them, he rose his crucifix and told them not to move. After examining them, he concluded that they were human and introduced himself as Charlie Vincent, the mightiest of all vampire hunters. He commented that they looked like villagers and asked if they had lost their way in the forest. The two hunters explained that they had come in order to put an end to Dracula but the old man was not impressed. He told them to leave the Dark Lord to him, as Dracula was not the sort of opponent for an amateur vampire hunter and a little girl. Reinhardt calmly responded that the vampire was not to be taken lightly, but Carrie lost her temper and told the man not to speak of matters that didn't concern him. An offended Charlie called her an obstinate youth and then told her that he wouldn't give another warning. Reinhardt interfered and asked the man if he had the key to the archives, which the man confirmed. He had found it in the rose garden and gave it to them before taking off.

In the archives, they found the key that led to the maze garden, but before leaving the mansion, they stumbled on a contract laying on the floor. Suddenly, a man appeared behind them who asked if they might have seen a scroll around there. After the contract was handed to him, the man introduced himself as Renon. Renon offhandedly referred to himself as a demon, but when he noticed the surprise of the duo he quickly explained that he was there to help by providing items in exchange for a price. The demon salesman said that when the need would arise, the scroll could be used to summon him, and then disappeared.

While in the garden, the two heroes heard the sound of bushes rustle and quickly turned around to see a young boy who asked them for help. The child introduced himself as Malus and said that his mother and father had been killed during an attack on his village. All the children had been taken hostage, but a man in a dark clock was looking for one specifically. Malus couldn't remember the rest and Reinhardt and Carrie said that he had to rest. Suddenly, an enormous dog came rushing towards them and Malus quickly ran off in terror. The two followed him and managed to bring him to safety. They led the boy to an exit of the garden and told him to watch out for the demons in the forest. After seeing the child off, they found a key that would help them continue their mission. It allowed them entry to an underground passageway. There were two separate paths that lay ahead of them and the duo decided to split up and explore the two areas on their own. They separated for the time being and Carrie headed to an underground tunnel while Reinhardt decided to travel through a mine instead.

Within its dark depths, Reinhardt encountered Rosa, but much to his surprise, she tried to take her own life by walking into a ray of sunlight. He rushed towards her and dragged her away while ignoring her pleas to stop. Rosa asked why he would help a vampire and Reinhardt answered that God always forbids suicide. The vampire lowered her head in sorrow and commented that even in death her soul could not find forgiveness. She concluded that she had to be killed instead, but Reinhardt refused to kill her. Rosa angrily asked why he couldn't do it and why he couldn't harm anything that had the shape of a woman or a child. Reinhardt went silent and the vampire said that he could never stand up to Dracula and then walked away.

Reinhardt met up with Carrie again at the Castle Center, but they were unable to proceed further because a wall was blocking their path. While investigating, they found a lizard man who was walling to help them out. The creature explained that he was turned into a monster by Dracula's followers and told the two heroes that they needed Magical Nitro and Mandragora in order to blow up the wall. He informed them that the Mandragora could be found in the Torture Chamber and gave them a key that allowed entry.

In the room, they encountered Malus again and asked what he was still doing in that dangerous place. The boy was seemingly confused and didn't give a clear answer. He asked if they had come to avenge his family and rescue his friend, which the duo confirmed. Much to their surprise, Malus burst into laughter and said that was impossible. He taunted them, saying that they would find their end and that darkness would rule the world once more before he disappeared. That left the two heroes stunned, but they eventually continued their search for the Magical Nitro.

In the room behind the wall, they found a crystal that could activate an elevator that could lead to two towers. Reinhardt and Carrie wanted to explore them both, but only one tower at a time could be accessed by the elevator. They were forced to split up again and Reinhardt decided to venture inside the Duel Tower.

He encountered Rosa on the way to the elevator and she warned him to leave the castle at once. Reinhardt responded that fleeing was not an option because sealing Dracula was his duty. The vampire was saddened by his resolve and was forced to attack him. Although Reinhardt didn't wish to fight Rosa at first, he eventually realised that he had no other choice and was able to overpower her. She had fallen to her knees and begged the vampire hunter to finish her. Rosa declared that she could longer stand the agony of being a cursed soul and Reinhardt asked if Dracula's magic had made her a vampire. That was indeed true, and she asked Reinhardt to tell her parents that she never fully lost her human soul. Suddenly, Death appeared between them. He remarked that Rosa's vampiric side would eventually deepen and take stronger hold. He left and took Rosa with him.

In the Room of Clocks, Reinhardt caught up with him and they had their final showdown there. Death was able to surprise the Hunter and attacked him with his sickles. One of them hit Reinhardt in the back, which left temporarily stunned, allowing Death his chance at the final blow. He summoned a volley of sickles and threw them at the helpless warrior. Suddenly, Rosa jumped in and embraced Reinhardt and was hit by Death's attack instead. He questioned Rosa, asking if she had forgotten the vampire blood that ran through her veins. The vampire told Death that Reinhardt's heart was pure and then asked the hunter to kill the Count. As long as Dracula existed, the horror would continue, and she didn't want anyone else to suffer her fate. She was on the brink of death and passed on after Reinhardt said a prayer that cleansed her of her sins committed during her life as a vampire. The Hunter then declared that Death could never be forgiven and attacked. After the fight, Reinhardt stood victorious and Death was sent back to his dark realm while the God commented that he would reserve a warm spot for him in the underworld.

At the Castle Keep, Reinhardt was reunited with Carrie, and together they pressed on to Dracula's Throne Room. They had almost reached the doors that would lead them to the Dark Lord when Renon appeared from the shadows. He announced that he was about to take his leave, but there was still a small business matter that he had to deal with. He asked the heroes if they had ever read the contract they used in order to buy the goods he sold. Renon explained that they had signed a contract with the devil, and because the duo had spent over 30,000 gold pieces they had to surrender up their souls. The demon salesman revealed his true form and was planning on dragging the two hunters to the underworld, but his plan was thwarted when they defeated him.

Upon reaching the Throne Room, the duo had an encounter and skirmish with the Dark Lord. He fell to his knees and mocked the two heroes one final time by asking if they really believed that they had won. He declared that saving the world was no simple task and that this time darkness would rule the world; he then died in a ray of light. They believed that they had fulfilled their mission and quickly made their way through the crumbling castle. At a lone tower, they found Malus once again. They sensed an evil aura coming from the boy and asked Malus who he truly was. The boy declared that he was actually Dracula reborn and that the vampire the two fought earlier was merely his servant, Gilles de Rais.

Reinhardt and Rosa reunited.

The three battled, but Dracula was eventually brought to his knees and then turned to mist. Malus suddenly materialized and pretended to have been possessed. Before Reinhardt and Carrie came close to him, Malus was hit with holy water, which engulfed his flesh. An arriving Charlie Vincent explained that Malus was the real Dracula and that his childlike appearance was a trick. His plan thwarted again, the Dark Lord used his remaining power to transport Reinhardt and Carrie to a different realm and turned into an enormous demon. Despite his efforts, Dracula was defeated once again and his plan was ruined.

After the gigantic monster was sucked back into the Chaos Realm, Reinhardt and Carrie were transported to the safety of a nearby mountain cliff. The hunter grieved and asked the girl if the struggle against Dracula would ever end. They suddenly witnessed a divine happening. A single rose fell from the sky, and as they looked up, they noticed even more falling around them. Rosa was reborn and she embraced Reinhardt and he told her that his struggle was endless as long as there was evil in man's heart. However, faith would give them the strength to fight against despair. They returned to Rosa's village where she could meet up with her family. Before they leff, they looked at the collapsed castle one final time.
