Story
Before Castlevania
Morris, along with two of his close friends, battled and defeated Count Dracula in the year 1820. His friends perished in the conflict. They had a son together named Nathan Graves. Since the boy no longer had his parents, Morris raised him alongside his own son, Hugh Baldwin. Morris brought both of them up to be vampire hunters so they may continue his legacy and that of Nathan's parents. Though Hugh proved to be the more adept of the two, he harbored a contemptuous and over confident attitude, which could be dangerous and destructive. Because of that, Morris passed down his weapon, the Hunter Whip, not to his son Hugh, but to Nathan, making Nathan his true successor.
That decision only made Hugh worse. Morris realized that Hugh had a great weakness to overcome, and until Hugh realized that and overcame it himself, he would not be bestowed the title of Vampire Hunter.
Events of Circle of the Moon
In the year 1830, Morris learned that the vampire countess Carmilla was planning the resurrection of Count Dracula in a castle in Austria. Morris rushed there as fast as he could along with his two apprentices to prevent the Dark Lord's reawakening. They were too late. Dracula returned, but his strength was not yet full. After defeating Morris' apprentices by sending them down a huge pit, the old vampire hunter was captured by Carmilla and Dracula. They planned to use Morris as a sacrifice to return Dracula to full strength, but they could not begin the rite until the moon was full.
In the nick of time, Nathan arrived to save Morris and battle Dracula. Hugh also came and escorted Morris to safety while Nathan destroyed the Count with the whip Morris had given him. After Dracula and Carmilla's deaths, the castle crumbled, and Morris, Hugh, and Nathan stood at a cliff as the sun rose over Austria.
Morris declared that Nathan had earned the title of vampire hunter, but Hugh would have to begin his training anew. The ordeal made Hugh fully aware of his weaknesses, and he agreed to continue training under his father until he, like Nathan, was ready to become a full vampire hunter.
