Story
Before Castlevania
Hector was born to a normal family in Wallachia but already possessed extraordinary abilities at birth. Ever since he was little, animals were attracted to him. Besides stray dogs and cats, he was also able to get along with animals that lived at night. He often brought them home in order to take care of them, to much annoyance of his mother, who saw him as a devil. The villagers eventually noticed the unusual animals that accompanied him and were soon frightened and began treating Hector as an outcast. His father, an alchemist who only gave for wealth and honour, never even noticed that all the people in the villages hated his son.
One day, Hector decided to run away from home, as he could no longer stand to be treated differently from the rest of his village. He had no idea what to do, and hid in the woods while desperately praying for someone to help him. He suddenly noticed that the church's village was on fire. Hector heard a group of villagers approaching who held him responsible for arson and were out to capture the boy. He quickly fled deeper into the forest while strange voices started to talk to him. It was a group of Innocent Devils who told him that he was free now and promised him a place where he could belong. They led him to a dark castle near a mountain cliff, covered in mist. Hector was shocked to see a field of impaled soldiers surrounding the castle.
He nonetheless ventured inside the demonic castle and met Count Dracula, who noticed Hector's abilities and trained him in the arts of Devil Forgery. As the years passed, his powers grew significantly and he became one of Dracula's most powerful and trusted followers. Hector was summoned to Dracula's Throne Room one night, where he was introduced to the young and enigmatic Isaac, who possessed the same talents as him. He was also an outcast after he and his sister were forced to flee after being accused of witchcraft. They became friends, and Isaac looked up to him. Though he was often frustrated because no matter what he tried to get into the favor of the Count, Dracula always preferred Hector over him.
Events of Dracula's Curse
In 1476, Dracula began waging a great war on humanity and, naturally, Hector and Isaac were sent to the front lines to serve as commanders. Hector witnessed great horrors during the war, and he was forced to kill. Because he greatly regretted his actions, he pleaded with Dracula to come to his senses at stop the wicked crusade. The Vampire Lord could not be reasoned with, and after being ordered to assassinate the vampire hunter Trevor Belmont, who was bound on stopping the Count, Hector saw his chance to escape and abandon his former home.
The next day, he found himself laying in the woods and noticed that he was injured. He was found by a nun named Rosalee, who had set out to find strawberries and stumbled upon him in the bushes. She carefully poked him with a stick, but Hector said that she shouldn't bother with him, since he would be a corpse soon. Rosalee ignored his pleas, and took him to her village, where she bandaged his wounds and laid him to rest in her house.
While recovering, he had a feeling that Isaac was nearby, which was indeed true. During the night, while the moon was full, Rosalee, who was accompanied by a young boy named Ted, came storming into his room. They were pursued by a werewolf who was out for their blood. Rosalee told Ted and Hector to flee as quickly as possible before the creature could reach the house. Hector ignored them and was sitting up straight while awaiting the werewolf's arrival. The young boy was suddenly hit in the shoulder with a sharp piece of wood thrown at him by the monster. He had also captured Rosalee and Ted desperately begged Hector to aid them. The Devil Forgemaster refused and pointed out that his powers were not suited for helping people. The man wolf mocked them and said that that the weak should be ruled by the creatures of the night and serve as their food. He praised Lord Dracula for making this possible. Hector was surprised that the monster mentioned the name of the Vampire Lord and quickly realised that he was a pursuer from Wallachia. He came to the conclusion that the wolf must have followed his scent. Knowing that he couldn't afford to give away his whereabouts to Dracula, he took his sword and engaged in battle.
He asked Ted if he still wanted protection if he knew that Hector's powers were cursed and that relying on them was a sin. The boy said that he didn't care if his powers would anger God, as long as he would save Rosalee. Hector then injured the werewolf with one quick swing of his blade. An Innocent Devil was summoned into the room and the wolf was shocked when he realised he was fighting a Devil Forgemaster. He tried to save his own skin by saying that he would leave the woman and the child alone. Hector didn't listen and decapitated him. Rosalee and Ted were saved, but because Hector had to resort to using his demonic powers, he unwillingly gave his location away to Isaac, who was ordered to track him down.
After the battle, Hector was about to set off, but Ted questioned him about it. He told the boy about his past, how he used the devil's power to summon and command evil. It was meant to inflict harm on humans, so it was for the best that he left. He disappeared into the wilderness while his Innocent Devils asked why he was leaving and asked him to go back. Hector realised that his cursed power had once again chased him back to the place he belonged, which was nowhere. One of his devils gave him a vision about his past, implying that Dracula's Castle was his home, but Hector refused to go back to that place. Suddenly, some of his devils were killed before his eyes, and Isaac approached saying that he wanted to see his former friend. He said that Hector couldn't be forgiven for judging their Lord's deeds and then attacked him.
Because of Hector's injuries, Isaac was an even more dangerous opponent than he already was. Isaac offered him a chance to return to Dracula one final time, but Hector said that he obtained his power in order to remain human, and not be a pawn in an insane plot for revenge. They were about to continue their skirmish when they both suddenly sensed that the presence of Dracula was fading. A strange essence came from the castle and flowed into the two men. The curse that the Vampire Lord had cast before he died effected Hector's mind, filling it with desire to kill. In this short moment of distraction, Isaac saw his chance to strike and was able to lend a blow on him with his fist. He said that it was all his fault that Lord Dracula and had died and charged at the unarmed Hector. They were both injured from the confrontation. Isaac, who was standing at the edge of a mountain cliff, was no longer able to maintain his balance and fell into the ravine below.
Hector, who was on the brick of death, collapsed and realised the irony of him dying along with Dracula. Before this could happen, he was found by Rosalee, who was once again able to save his life.
Events of Curse of Darkness
When Hector arrived at the Abandoned Castle, he angrily shouted at Isaac to come out. When Isaac revealed himself, Hector commented that he had finally tracked him down. Isaac was not impressed by this notion and revealed that it was him who had lured his former ally to the castle. Hector declared that he was there for revenge, but the truth of the matter was that in his current state he was no match for Rosalee's murderer. He had given up his demonic powers, as they would only lead to bloodshed and feelings of regret. Isaac knew that, but he wanted his old friend to suffer for his betrayal and for almost letting him fall to his death three years prior. Hector realised that he had to regain his powers for the revenge he sought, so he set off in pursuit of Isaac, who had disappeared into the Abandoned Castle.
Within its walls, Hector came across a tombstone that contained an Innocent Devil. Isaac had carved the instructions into stone, but Hector was able to summon the devil on his own. He suddenly heard the sound of someone clapping behind him, and turned around to see a missionary. The man introduced himself as Zead and said that he was impressed by Hector's display of Devil Forging. He was searching for a way to cure the land of Dracula's Curse and Isaac was the one who protected it. He informed Hector that Isaac had fled to the chapel on the other side of the mountains. The Devil Forgemaster thanked him for his help and continued his mission.
In the mountain range, Hector encountered a woman that bared a striking resemblance to Rosalee. She introduced herself as Julia Laforeze and revealed that she was a witch who had escaped the witch hunts in the western lands. She asked Hector if the man that he was looking for was a friend or enemy. He declared that Isaac was his most bitter enemy and because of that, Julia strangely offered to help Hector by selling him goods and taking care of his Innocent Devils. He then headed onward, while being fascinated by how much she reminded him of his lost love.
Before the entrance of the Garibaldi Temple, an oddly dressed man appeared in front of Hector who said he had been waiting for him. Hector suspiciously asked who he was, and the gentleman introduced himself as Saint Germain. He requested that Hector stop pursuing Isaac, but the Devil Forgemaster took that as an attempt to thwart him and accused the man of being on his enemy's side. Hector immediately realised that didn't make sense, because Isaac wished to fight him. Hector abruptly asked the intentions of the mysterious stranger. Saint Germain responded, saying that he simply wished to maintain the flow of a greater will. He seemed to know everything regarding Hector and his quest like his pursuit of Isaac and the lamentable incident regarding Rosalee. Hector angrily demanded to know how the man learned such things, but the stranger wouldn't tell him. Before vanishing, he cryptically said that the fate of the world would be determined by Hector's actions.
Though the Devil Forgemaster was baffled by that encounter, he pressed on to the temple. Within its halls, he was suddenly approached by a man who asked if he was a Devil Forgemaster. Hector, in turn, noticed the whip the man was wielding and recalled a man named Trevor Belmont, who had defeated Count Dracula three years ago. When Hector admitted that he indeed was a Devil Forger, the vampire hunter suddenly attacked. After defeating Hector, the man confirmed that he was Trevor Belmont, and expressed his surprise at Hector's powers, which seemed much too weak for a Devil Forgemaster. Hector realised the vampire hunter was hunting Isaac as well. After introducing themselves properly, the two parted ways.
At the Mortvia Aqueduct, he once again ran into Zead, who was pleased to see him unharmed. The missionary informed him that Isaac made his way to a ghost town beyond the forest, and quickly excused himself afterward. Almost immediately after Zead's exit, Saint Germain appeared before Hector in a flash of light, and surprised to encounter Hector instead of someone else. Before taking leave, he warned Hector not to be drawn in by Zead's words. That left Hector puzzled, but it didn't effect his resolve and he traveled to the Forest of Jigramunt.
At its entrance, he stumbled upon both Zead and Saint Germain and spied the two arguing over interfering with the affairs of fate. The missionary couldn't have Saint Germain interfere any longer and tried to strike him, but was unable to. After declaring that he would keep returning, Germain disappeared in a flash of light. Zead then used his blade to open a dimensional rift, leaving Hector even more confused.
After traveling past the woods and through the abandoned town of Cordova, Hector found Isaac, who was expecting him. Isaac wanted to test Hector's abilities in order to see how much power he had regained. The battle was suddenly interrupted by Julia, who told Isaac to stop. Hector was shocked when he heard Julia refer to Isaac as "brother". Isaac agreed to stop and withdraw for the time being. Before leaving, he warned Hector that the only way he'd defeat him was to regain even more of his powers.
The Devil Forgemaster was outraged that Julia got in his way, as his chance to achieve his revenge was lost. Julia told him that he still lacked the strength and spirit to defeat Isaac. Hector told her to go to Belmont or any other vampire hunter that was strong enough to take Isaac down. She declared that he was the only one who should defeat him, since there was a chance that he could free her brother from the curse. Hector understood and apologised, but he soon set off for Isaac again.
Beyond the town was an enormous clock tower that Hector decided to investigate. At the tower's peak, he found Saint Germain waiting for him. The man stated that he had fallen into Zead's trap and was unable to leave the area. Despite that major drawback, he discovered that he was able to have a physical effect on his surroundings while in that state. He challenged Hector to a duel in order to answer some of his own questions.
Saint Germain promised not to interfere with Hector anymore after Hector was able to defeat him. When the Devil Forgemaster directly asked Germain who he was. The man said that he was a traveler, only half there and not allowed to adjust reality. He assured Hector to continue walking his path without fear. The barrier was lifted, and Saint Germain vanished.
In the Aiolon ruins, Hector stumbled upon Isaac and Trevor, who were locked in combat. After noticing his former ally, Isaac retreated but not before injuring the vampire hunter with his spear. Him withdrawing at the sight of Hector assured the vampire hunter that the two were indeed enemies. Despite that, Trevor found his meddling unwelcome and told him to yield.
When Belmont was gone, Zead appeared behind Hector, who had once again obtained valuable information regarding Isaac's whereabouts. This time, he was heading back to the abandoned castle, to a hidden chamber underneath its ruins. When Hector mentioned that Saint Germain would no longer meddle with his affairs, the missionary panicked and left in a hurry.
Hector was able to find a secret passageway that led to the chamber and was surprised to see Trevor at the entrance. He informed the vampire hunter of the hidden chamber below the castle's grounds and that Isaac was there now. Trevor passed that off as impossible because the seal placed on the entrance could only be opened with the blood of his clan. Then, he suddenly realised the reason why Isaac fought him was to tap some blood from him in order to enter the chamber. Belmont had no choice but to test how much power Hector had gained and suddenly attacked him. During the battle, Hector showed that his powers had grown, and he was worthy to advance to the place Isaac fled to. Trevor broke the seal and let Hector travel ahead of him, but before he left, he told the Devil Forgemaster to show no mercy.
The portal took Hector to an alternate dimension and he eventually found a mysterious seal guarded by a Dullahan. During the battle, he unknowingly broke the seal due to producing demonic magic while battling the headless Knight. After defeating the creature, Hector suddenly sensed an enormous surge of power, and much to his shock, realised that it was coming from the newly risen castle of Dracula. He had become part of a scheme set up by Zead (who was in reality Death), but he wouldn't realise it until later.
Having left the bizarre dimension, Hector approached Dracula's Castle where he met up with Julia. She informed him that it was possible that Dracula had been brought back from death since his castle had been resurrected. The Devil Forgemaster said if that was the case, they should seek the aid of Belmont. Julia said that was not impossible, as he was greatly injured by Isaac, and she had only barely saved his life. Thus, Hector entered the castle alone.
Near the castle's highest point, Hector found Isaac, and the two engaged in a severe battle. Hector was able to defeat him and was about to land a final blow before snapping out from the influence of the Dracula's curse, which he just realized he was under. This event was what Saint Germain foresaw in the future and made Hector useless for Death's plan. The Death God wanted to use his body as a vessel for Count Dracula, but since he was no longer under the influence of his Lord's curse, that was no longer possible.
Zead then made his entrance and revealed to Hector that he was Death, Dracula's most loyal servant. He explained his plan to the Devil Forgemaster and regretted that Hector could no longer serve as a vessel for Dracula. Instead, Isaac was used and Hector had to been taken care of. Hector and the God of Death battled, and Hector was eventually able to overcome him. Hector then set off towards his final task.
When Hector entered the Throne Room, Dracula was reborn from inside the coffin that held Isaac. The Vampire Lord greeted his former ally and asked why he had betrayed him. Hector, in turn, asked why Dracula began slaughtering humans completely at random and the Dark Lord answered that it was because they had dared to judge him. He was only returning the favor when he sentenced them all to extinction. They battled, but because Dracula hadn't regained full power, Hector was able to vanquish him.
Upon his defeat, Dracula declared that, even though his soul would return to the abyss, his curse would not be lifted. Now that Hector had regained his full powers, he could thwart Dracula's plan by forging the curse into something harmless. Once all deeds were done, the castle began to crumble. With nothing left to live for, Hector planned on dying with his former master. Julia suddenly appeared and convinced him that he had paid his debt and deserved to live.
Julia invited Hector to stay with her in the Baljhet Mountains, where he could conceal his many devils from normal folk. He gladly accepted, and finally found the peace that he was longing for.
