Story

Before Castlevania

Eric Lecarde was born on May 3, 1892 in Segovia, Spain to a noble family, the Lecardes, a branch of the Belmont Clan and would one day meet John Morris. Destiny entwined them because Eric's powers were the key to enabling a Morris to use the full power of the Vampire Killer whip and this lead to the two becoming friends for many years to come. Eventually, John's father, Quincy Morris, traveled to Transylvania in order to defeat Dracula, but never returned. Eric, along with John, then trained to become a vampire hunter in order to follow Quincy in his footsteps.

Events of Judgment

Note: The following events are from Castlevania Judgment and its canonical merits are uncertain.

Eric meets the orginal wielder of the Alucard Spear.

One day, Eric left his house as usual, only to find himself standing in a most unusual place. There, he would meet a stranger who introduced himself as Aeon, who welcomed Eric to a rift in time, but this revelation didn't seem to have shocked Eric. Aeon explained that this was the place where he may touch that which he desired the most. Yet, there were many trials he had to pass in order to achieve that goal. His first test was to defeat the time traveler, in which he succeeded.

Eric faced many opponents he never heard of, one of them was Alucard, who immediately recognized his old weapon. The Dhampir asked him if he was from house Lecarde, which was the case. When Alucard asked how the Morris familly was doing, Eric declared that with his spear they were no longer necessary and he wanted to prove it's power by battling its creator. The two fought and Eric came out victorious.

Eventually, Eric faced the legendary Trevor Belmont, but was scolded by the vampire hunter because of his tone. The youth then provoked Trevor by asking if he thought that he was stronger just because Trevor was older. The hunter then remarked that Eric could use a little lesson in manners. He accepted the challenge and said that he would teach Trevor that his weapon isn't half the weapon he took it for. Eric was able to overpower the legendary warrior and continued on his journey.

Eric's final opponent was Maria Renard, and he was stunned to meet her. The girl then pointed out that he was staring and didn't seem to appreciate this. Eric then asked her to show the power that even surpasses that of a Belmont, which she would. After even triumphing over her, Eric was certain that he didn't even have to fear Dracula himself.

Aeon gained another soul key and came a step closer to his goal, and Eric returned to his own time period where eventually he would meet his true love, Gwendolyn.

Events of Bloodlines

Several years passed and Eric was living a peaceful life with Gwendolyn, but after the outbreak of World War I, she was kidnapped and vampirized by the countess Elizabeth Bartley. Eric tracked down his former lover but, despite his great magical abilties, was unable to cure her of her vampirism and he was forced to put an end to her life.

During the end of the war, he, along with John, discovered that Elizabeth was trying to resurrected Dracula and took advantage of the many anguished souls and lost lives. This was the beginning of their quest, but Eric didn't tell John that his true motivation was revenge for his lost love.

They traveled to the ruins of Dracula's castle in Romania, but were unable to find any trace of Dracula. After learning that Elizabeth was nearby, they followed in hot pursuit while fighting their way all across Europe. With much effort, Eric and John were able to finally end the menace of Dracula and Elizabeth after a final showdown in Castle Proserpina.

Interlude

Apparently, years after, Eric married again and sired twin daughters, Stella and Loretta. But after they turned 21, the vampire, Brauner, a vampire who lost his daughters in World War I went mad with grief. Due to unknown reasons, perhaps trying to stop Brauner, Eric traveled to Dracula's Castle. It was there that he was severely injured, possibly as a result of fighting with Brauner. Stella and Loretta came to aid him, but they were bitten by Brauner in an attempt to turn them into his daughters. Even though Eric begged Brauner to stop, he did not. Eric either died afterward, or was killed by Brauner.

Events of Portrait of Ruin

Eric's spirit didn't pass on, however, and he was able to bind himself to the castle. Because of his strong will, he was able to avoid getting controlled by its power and continued to wander the castle in search for someone who could stop Brauner, who had became the castle's new lord.

Eventually, Eric would encounter John's son, Jonathan, and his partner, Charlotte Aulin, but would keep his true identity hidden. Jonathan sensed Eric's presence and was ready to vanquish what he thought to be an evil spirit. But Eric taunted him by saying that he couldn't destroy him with a whip he couldn't use. Charlotte pointed out that the spirit they had encountered was not controlled by the castle's power. Eric revealed that he had cast a magic barrier upon himself before he died, binding his soul to the castle but also trapping himself within its walls. The two young vampire hunters wondered who he was and Eric introduced himself under the alias Wind. Wind offered his assistance by providing them with weapons and teaching them techniques he once possessed in life.

Eventually, Jonathan and Charlotte rushed back to Eric and questioned him about an urgent matter. They showed Eric a pendant with a photograph of him with Stella and Loretta, the vampire daughters of Brauner. Eric was shocked and revealed his true identity, Eric Lecarde, John Morris' best friend. He further explained that the girls in that photo were his daughters, who were captured and vampirized by Brauner. Eric knew that the secret to unlocking the whip's power lay with the Lecarde family, but was unable to help in a deceased state, as were his daughters. Jonathan sighed and uttered that his title as the successor of the Vampire Killer was meaningless without being able to unlock its true potential.

Eric could no longer hold back from telling Jonathan the real reason why his father had died. John died because for one who is not a direct member of the Belmont family, the whip's true power can only be unleashed if its wielder is prepared to give up part of his or her own life. The Lecarde family acted as the key so that it will only be used when necessary. This was the reason why John never completed his son's training; so that he could rely on his own power instead of the whip, so that Jonathan would not die like John did.

Jonathan then asked why the Belmont family had committed the Morris Clan to such a fate. Eric explained that the Belmonts could not touch the whip again until the year 1999, the predicted year of Dracula's final defeat. In the meantime, others must stand up and counter the Dark Lord. Charlotte came up with the idea of saving Stella and Loretta by purifying them with one of her spells. Eric said that he the chances were very slim, but if they were successful in curing them, he didn't want his daughters to know of his existence, because seeing them one last time was good enough.

The spell worked, and Jonathan was able to unlock the whip's full power - with the aid of Stella and Loretta - and sealed Dracula away. They were standing on a mountain cliff, watching the castle crumble when Eric suddenly materialized and congratulated them on a job well done. He then said his goodbyes to his daughters, and as he was fading away, he told them to lives their lives for all they were worth.
