Carmilla, also known as Camilla, is a vampiress worshipper of Dracula and holds a high ranking position in his army. Carmilla is loosely based on the Sheridan Le Fanu character, Carmilla, from the novel of the same name.

Story

Events of Circle of the Moon

In 1830, Carmilla rose again and plotted to revive Dracula. She prepared a ritual in an old Austrian castle that would break the seal that was put on her master. After she had finished the ritual, Morris Baldwin and his pupils, Nathan Graves and Hugh Baldwin, rushed into the Ceremonial Room and confronted the newly risen Vampire Lord. Dracula immediately recognized Morris as the one who had put an end to him ten years prior and separated Hugh and Nathan from him by plunging them into the deep caverns underneath the castle. Dracula then planned to drain Morris' life in order to regain his full power, but had to wait until the moon was full for the rite to be completed.

After a long journey, Nathan Graves managed to fight his way to the Underground Waterway where he would confront the Vampire Countess in person. The youth asked what her motive was and she explained that humanity is dark and perverse, and that she only wants the world to reflect that image. She teased Nathan, telling him that Hugh succumbed to the darkness and joined her. Carmilla engaged the young vampire hunter in battle but was ultimately defeated. Even during her final moments, she continued chiding Nathan, telling him that Dracula only needs the moon eclipse to get all his power, and then faded away.

Events of Castlevania Judgment

Note: The following events are from Castlevania Judgment and its canonical merits are uncertain.

One night, Carmilla awoke from her slumber, feeling that the time to aid in Dracula's resurrection was at hand. While she searched for somebody to quench her thirst, she suddenly encountered a man with a strange air about him. He introduced himelf as Aeon and welcomed her to a rift in time. The time traveler explained that this was the place where she may touch that which she desired the most. Yet, there were many trials she had to pass in order to achieve that goal. Her first test was to defeat the time traveler, in which she succeeded.

Carmilla faced many opponents she never heard of, one of them was Dracula's son, Alucard. The countess asked how long he was still planning to antagonize the Dark Lord, but the Dhampir answered that she already knew the answer. Carmilla lost her temper and declared that she had it with him. The two battled and Carmilla came out victorious and she said that the battle had only wet her appetite.

Eventually, Carmilla faced a woman she thought to be most unusual, as the energy she radiated was that of her own kind. The woman, who was known as Shanoa, told Carmilla that her power was Carmilla's bane. The vampiress angrily said that her power belonged to the children of the night, and it was not something for humans to trifle with. Carmilla attacked without further questioning and was able to overpower Shanoa, which allowed her to continue her journey.

Carmilla's final opponent was the man-beast, Blue Crescent Moon, whom Dracula once asked to join the ranks of his legions. The vampire expressed that although the Dark Lord has need for him, she herself certainly does not. Carmilla explained her true reason to battle him; he was no true child of the night, and thus had no right to serve under Dracula. They engaged in battle and this eventually resulted in another victory for Carmilla.

Aeon gained another soul key and came a step closer to his goal, and Carmilla returned to her own time period. There she would be slain by many different hunters, but would continue to serve her Lord until the very end.

Trivia

  • Camilla herself is based on the titular character of the novella, an Austrian countess and vampire.
  • In the Carmilla novel, Carmilla takes advantage of the anonymity of a masquerade ball to look for victims. The mask that appears in Simon's Quest and Rondo is a reference to this.
  • Laura, the girl who appears alongside Camilla in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, was the narrator of the Carmilla novel.
  • In Castlevania: Dracula X, if Richter fails to save Annette Renard, a skull will appear and possess her in the Clock Tower. The resulting enemy closely resembles Camilla.
  • A model of Carmilla atop her skull can be seen in early footage for Castlevania 64. However, she is not present in the final game.
  • In Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, a statue can be found in the Skeleton Cave B which is clearly intended to resemble Carmilla's mask (referred to as Vampira) from Simon's Quest and Rondo of Blood.
