Story
Before Castlevania
After losing both his daughters during World War I Brauner went mad with grief. Two decades later another massive conflict broke out, and the souls of those who had died started to gather. After four years, the agony of hatred of the spirits brought forth Dracula's legendary Castle. It's influence awoke Brauner's hidden magical power, and with his new found strength, sought to become the next Dark Lord. Because of Dracula's repeated demishes in the past, Brauner took measures to assure the ancient vampire would not return along with his stronghold. He placed a seal in the Throne Room which would prevent Dracula from returning to the mortal realm. Brauner then used his new-found abilities to gather full control over the Castle by keeping its power locked away in his paintings. After having accomplished this feat, he planned to cause an apocalypse and push mankind over the edge. He had deemed them unworhty of walking the earth as they obviously hadn't learned from their past mistakes, and took this opportunity to have his revenge.
Renowned vampire hunter Eric Lecarde set out to investigate after receiving word of Castlevania's return. He challenged its new Lord Brauner to a duel but was severly injured in the process. His two daughters, Stella and Stella, came to his aid and engaged into battle. However, Brauner managed to defeat them as well, and turned them both into vampires before the eyes of their father. Eric begged the vampire to stop, but he didn't becausein these two girls he saw the reincarnation of this beloved daughters. Brauner wanted to influence their minds, and let them stay by his side forever.
Events of Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Eventually news of two other vampire hunters trying to infiltrate the Castle was brought to his attention by Loretta. Apperently they had entered one of his paintaings and managed to defeat its guardian. Brauner then decided to meet these warriors and welcomed them to his estate. A bold young man, named Jonathan Morris, demanded to know if he was planning on reviving Dracula. Brauner didn't found this to be neccessary, and had managed to claim Dracula's magic for his own. He explained by which means he was able to accomplish this, as well as his goal to steal the world from mankind and reshape it.
Brauner retreated to the painting which acted as the center of his power, and ordered Stella and Loretta to take care of the intruders. When he sensed two individuals enter his personal domain he expected them to be his daughters who brought him news of the interlopers' demises. Instead it were the two young heroes themselves who had come to challenge him. They told him that by the means of Charlotte's purification spell they had been able to break the vampire's hold over them. Brauner was outraged that they dared to take the reincarnations of his daughters away from him again. Filled by rage, he engaged in battle.
He attacked the vampire hunters which the secret powers of his paintings, but it was not enough. After being defeated, he cursed humanity for it was their wars that despoiled the earth and ruined the lives of others. He never would admit that justice was on their side. In his final moments his soul was claimed and he was removed as an obstacle for Dracula's revival.
