  1. DOS wasted a perfectly meaningful final boss fight

Menace, being a form taken by all the merged evil souls that Dmitri had absorbed with his duplicated Power of Dominance, would have made more storytelling sense assuming the shape of a ghost of Dracula.

    Not actual Dracula.

Just a ghostly image of him. Who also hits pretty hard.

    Like this guy.

My logic is that, as Menace is made by essentially locking the souls of evil monsters which would be serving the Dark Lord (if one currently existed) in a box until they merge and explode back out, from a pure relevancy-to-Soma's-character-arc viewpoint, it would have made symbolic sense for Menace to be in the shape of the previous Dark Lord. It could have been justified in all sorts of ways by the development team.
No matter how one slices it, a giant corpse monster doesn't really represent anything. It just sort of is.
I would have preferred that Soma faced something more symbolic of what he's fighting every day to not be.

Soma fights a giant corpse monster as his final "fuck you" at being the Dark Lord? Really Konami? Why not have him fight the leftover residue/image of Dracula, which would make all the sense in the world given that the fact that he's Dracula's reincarnation is brought up practically every other conversation that he's a part of?

It worked well enough for Juste's story, which had 1000% less narrative symbolism behind it.
  2. So Dark Souls is coming to the Switch

    12 January 2018 - 02:50 PM

So that was something. The Nintendo Mini Direct barely gave it the time of day by comparison to the in-depth announcements they gave everything else, but yeah. Huh. Dark Souls is finally landing Nintendo-side. Kind of stoked. I've never been great at the Dark Souls games, but I always enjoyed the aesthetic and the fandom that surrounds them and being able to practice Gitting Gud on the go will doubtless be very helpful for me. Also, to anybody who has ever loved Castlevania, Dark Souls is in that same broad genre of action game, and thus should be relevant to most of our interests.
  3. Just when I thought I was out...

    12 January 2018 - 01:33 PM

So, funny story. I was listening to some old music from high school (graduated 10 years ago... where does that time go?!) and among the playlists on my crazy-old-but-somehow-still-functional iPod Classic was the Dracula New Classic arrangement album from back when Konami actually did stuff. It immediately got me all nostalgic-like, and so of course I popped in Curse of Darkness and the Castlevania Double Pack, otherwise known as the games that got me into this fandom in the first place, and I swear guys, it was like I never left. I've beaten these games god only knows how many times (though nowhere near as much as Symphony of the Night) and yet, it's like it was all new again for me. I felt like I was back in Junior High, finding the games for the first time on the recommendation of my girlfriend.

    I'm hooked again guys.

Side note: I also played the Lords of Shadow Trilogy again, and... I don't respect it any MORE than I did a few years ago, but I guess I do hate it less, if that makes any sense at all. Mirror of Fate, in particular, has grown on me as a highly flawed game that is a masterpiece of blending two genres. That "stealth" minigame sprinkled throughout LOS2 remains 100% Triple A Grade Pure Colombian Uncut Bullshit though. And to think that without it, LOS2 might have been a much more enjoyable game...

    Oh well.
